Clive Legg & Carl Head report on the progress of their 5S campaign.
During the month of November we started a project called the 5S. This is to improve our work areas by making life Simpler, Cleaner and more Efficient.
The 5s stands for:
It was decided by the group to start this process on the large screw ring section first, where photos were taken to identify areas for improvement, then using a colour coded tag system we identified priority for the things in our area, as follows:
GREEN: Used in the last or next 30 days
YELLOW: May be used in the next 6-12 months
RED: Remove Now (Sell or scrap)
Then followed a hive of activity, starting with deep clean of 4 off Matrix 24 internal thread grinding machines, de-greasing, painting and de-cluttering of all worktops, with toolkits pared down to just the essentials needed for each machine, which are to be mounted on shadow boards for easy access. Each month an audit will be carried out by a different department to maintain standards and celebrate success.
We have thoroughly enjoyed transforming our area into an organised, slicker and efficient unit. Carl commented; We are more productive, we have speeded up the process, now that all my tools are at hand and I will be even slicker once I’ve finished my shadow boards. We even feel better coming to work in a clean organised environment and I even think the other lads on the ring section, next door, are feeling a bit left out and the plug section want to know when they can start.
We look forward to helping other sections move their areas forward in the New Year.
